“This is an outrage!” my mother shrieked at the police lieutenant, her voice echoing shrilly off the high ceilings. “We are respected members of this community! My husband is on the country club board! Maya is hysterical and clumsy! She tripped on the rug and hit her own face on the edge of the table! She’s lying to you!”
My father, finally hauled to his feet by the sergeant, quickly nodded along, desperate to maintain the delusion. “Yes! Yes, she’s mentally unstable! She attacked my wife, and I had to restrain her! That man,” he pointed a bloody finger at Travis, “he assaulted me!”
Chloe, tears of mascara running down her cheeks, shrieked in agreement. “She’s jealous of me! She’s always been jealous! You can’t arrest us!”
Travis stepped forward from the shadows of the hallway. The sheer, overwhelming power of his presence commanded absolute silence in the room. He walked over to the lieutenant and held out his hand. The lieutenant handed him the police-issued tablet, which was now synced to the hidden recording device.
Travis didn’t yell. He didn’t argue with them. He simply looked at my mother with eyes as cold and unforgiving as the bottom of the ocean.
“Lieutenant,” Travis said, his voice carrying the calm, absolute authority of an executioner. “I believe this will clear up any confusion regarding the sequence of events.”
Travis tapped the screen. He hit play. He turned the volume to the absolute maximum.
The pristine, high-definition audio of the dinner echoed brutally through the shattered dining room.
First came my voice, shaking but defiant: “It’s not boring. It matters.”
Then, the terrifying silence.
